A town in Cornwall has become one of the first to install an electric vehicle charging cable channel through the pavement.
The Kerbo Charge channel, which recently featured on BBC’s Dragons’ Den, allows a charging cable to run safely from a house to a car parked on the street, keeping the pavement clear and safe.
Wadebridge resident Marcus Shirley believes he’s the first in Cornwall to have the channel installed. Previously, he had to rely on expensive public charge points or run a cable across the pavement, which posed a hazard.
“This cable channel means I can now safely and conveniently charge my car at home,” Mr Shirley said. “It will save a lot of money compared with filling up at public charge points. The guys did a lovely job installing it, and I’m sure my neighbours will all want one now.”
He added, “Electric vehicles should be for everyone, not just those with a driveway. Making EVs more accessible will speed up our journey to a cleaner, greener Cornwall.”
The installation of this channel could make electric car ownership possible for thousands of Cornish households without off-road parking. Cornwall Council is now accepting applications for cable channels from residents across the Duchy.
The price of a Kerbo Charge starts from £649, including VAT and installation, after applying the new £350 Government grant. It comes with a ten-year warranty. Residents can typically save £25 each time they charge at home off-peak compared to a public charger. More information can be found on the Cornwall Council website.
