Bath MP Wera Hobhouse has urged the government to increase investment in electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure to support growing demand. While EV sales reached record levels in 2024, with second-hand EV sales rising by 57.4%, concerns remain that the current charging network may struggle to keep up.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Hobhouse highlighted the challenges faced by residents in Bath and rural areas who are unable to switch to EVs due to a lack of charging points. She called for greater collaboration between the government and Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) to speed up the installation of new chargers. DNOs manage the distribution of electricity from the national grid to charging points, and increased demand is expected to put further strain on the network.
Transport Minister Lilian Greenwood acknowledged the issue, stating that capacity limitations within the distribution network have slowed the rollout of charging points. However, she confirmed that the Department for Transport is working with other government departments to address these challenges and accelerate infrastructure expansion.
With EV adoption rising, the push for improved charging accessibility remains a key priority to ensure drivers can charge their vehicles conveniently and reliably across the country.
