Drivers in the UK may see petrol and diesel prices rise in 2025 due to new government regulations aimed at boosting the use of renewable fuels.
Starting January 1, the mandated proportion of renewable fuel in petrol (E10) and diesel (B7) will increase. While the fuel composition remains unchanged for consumers, wholesale costs for retailers are expected to rise by 0.30p to 0.40p per litre. This could add up to £24 per tank for larger vehicles with 60-litre capacities.
Fuel prices already showed a slight upward trend in December 2024, with petrol increasing from 135.6p to 136.4p per litre and diesel rising from 141.6p to 142.7p. This contrasts with the earlier part of 2024, when prices steadily declined.
These changes highlight potential challenges for drivers as the new regulations take effect.
