UK fleet operators have placed electric vehicles (EVs), hydrogen-powered trucks and liquefied natural gas (LNG) at the heart of their long-term plans to reduce carbon emissions. Yet while some performance concerns – especially around EVs – persist, an increasing number of operators are turning to Renewable Diesel as a practical low-carbon alternative.
Produced from hydrogenated vegetable oils and other waste feedstocks, the fuel can cut CO₂ emissions by up to around 90% compared with conventional diesel, and is compatible with most existing diesel engines. This provides fleets with an immediate way to make an impact, enabling them to meet sustainability targets today without major investment or operational disruption.
Although HVO is already available at public filling stations nationwide, confidence in the fuel continues to grow. A national HVO supplier recently opened the UK’s first dedicated HVO bunker refuelling facility, signalling strong market commitment.
Unveiled to the industry at the Motor Transport Decarbonisation Summit in late September, the supplier highlighted that the launch reflects increasing market readiness, with 65% of larger HGV fleets (100+ vehicles) either already using or planning to adopt HVO within five years. Further network expansion is also planned to support wider uptake.
