Owners of electric cars warned as thieves targeting EV charging cables

May 20th, 2024

There have recently been some cable-cutting incidents which have resulted in InstaVolt, the UK’s largest electric vehicle charging network, helping their customers. It is predicted that thieves are targeting these cables for the copper used within them. The charge point operator has estimated that more than 20 of their electric vehicle charging stations have been targeted since November 2023.

To manage this situation, InstaVolt is upgrading their security across the affected sites in the Midlands and Yorkshire. By improving their current CCTV systems, deploying patrols, and placing tracking devices on their products, they hope to minimize any further attacks.

These new security measures also include the use of SmartWater, a traceable liquid that pins criminals to the scene of the crime using the smallest speck of liquid.

CEO Delvin Lane stated, “As an industry, we need to be giving drivers confidence that they will be able to charge their car, and we need to see swift law enforcement against the criminals causing disruption to EV drivers.”
