The number of vehicles on UK roads reached a record 41.96 million in 2024, marking a 1.4% increase from the previous year, according to new data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
Cars remain the most common vehicle type, rising to 36.17 million. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) recorded the fastest growth, up 38.9% to 1.33 million—exceeding the one million mark for the first time.
Plug-in vehicles, including hybrids, now make up 5.1% of all vehicles in use across the UK.
