HVO (Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil) Renewable Diesel has surged in popularity in the UK in recent years. Mainly used as a transport fuel and to power large events such as music festivals, it’s claimed that the wonder fuel can curb carbon emissions by up to 90%. But its green credentials are now being called into question.
The assumption that HVO is made from waste sources, particularly cooking oil or the sludge from palm oil production, is in dispute, with industry whistle-blowers claiming that virgin palm oil and other non-waste fuels are being used instead. If true, it would be a huge blow to the industry, and bad news for the planet. The UK government is currently investigating the claims.
