2025 is set to be a groundbreaking year for global EV adoption, with forecasts suggesting that nearly one in four vehicles sold worldwide will be electric – a 25% increase from 2024.
In the UK, recent reports only reinforce this optimistic outlook, confirming not just the country’s position as Europe’s leading adopter, but also solidifying its role at the forefront of the global EV movement.
September, with its new number plates and high sales volumes, is traditionally a key month for the UK automotive market, and this year’s figures have been especially promising. A total of 312,887 new cars were registered, marking the highest number since the peak in 2020.
Hybrid and electric vehicles accounted for over half (50.8%) of all registrations, with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) seeing a particularly strong boost. BEV registrations surged by 29.1% to 72,779, making it the best-performing month for BEVs on record, representing 23.3% of the overall market share.
A key factor in the growing confidence around EV adoption has been the expansion of public charging infrastructure. In line with the rise in EV sales, the UK continues to set the pace, now boasting over 86,000 charge points, with 3,928 new installations in the last quarter alone – a 22% increase year-on-year.
The rapid growth of both EVs and charging infrastructure is an encouraging sign. Fleet managers who are balancing sustainability goals with daily operational performance will find plenty of positive developments ahead. However, the journey to full electrification still requires careful planning, and our energy transition experts are here to assist every step of the way.
