UK has most expensive diesel in europe

Retailer margins remain above average for the price of diesel in the UK, says the RAC. The average cost for a litre of diesel is 155p, which is 5p more expensive than the second highest average amount of 150p per litre paid in Ireland and Belgium.

The RAC claims “there is no good reason” for the high prices that UK retailers are charging, blaming the lack of competition. Other European countries, which pay more fuel duty, still overall pay less to fill up their vehicle tanks, according to RAC data.

The fuel duty freeze was introduced in 2022 to help mitigate the rising costs of petrol and diesel as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The 5p per litre tax break helped drivers save roughly £50 per year and was extended for a further 12 months during the Budget announcement in March, although many motorists stated the support measures were not enough.
