Major upgrades are being rolled out at stops used by HGV drivers across the UK. A combined investment of £1.7 million, supported by matched funding from National Highways, is transforming overnight truck stops with modern amenities and enhanced security measures.
The improvements to these sites include new, robust security features such as three-metre-high fencing, advanced LED floodlighting, and state-of-the-art CCTV systems with infrared capabilities for remote monitoring. These measures aim to ensure safer, more secure parking environments for the 440,000 lorry drivers who park overnight and the millions of truckers who rely on rest areas annually.
In addition to safety upgrades, plans are underway to introduce outdoor gyms at select sites by 2025. These facilities are designed to help drivers maintain physical activity and support their overall well-being during rest periods.
With these upgrades, truck stops are taking an important step toward supporting the health, safety, and security of HGV drivers, ensuring they have access to better facilities while contributing to the efficiency of the UK’s vital transport network.
