Switching a fleet to EV helps businesses reduce emissions and improve sustainability. EVs are also cheaper to run and maintain than traditional gasoline or diesel vehicles, making it a very sound option.

Benefits of electrification

  • Better for the environment
Electric vehicles (EVs) produce no tailpipe emissions, which helps improve air quality and reduce CO2 emissions.
  • Lower running costs
EVs can be cheaper to operate than traditional gasoline or diesel vehicles as electricity is often less expensive than fuel. Also because they have less moving parts EVs tend to require less maintenance.
  • Government incentives
Governments currently offer a number of tax incentives and grants to encourage businesses to switch their fleets to EV. This can help offset potentially higher upfront investment costs.
  • Good for your brand
Switching your fleet to EV is good for your image and taking a proactive approach to improving sustainability shows you care about the environment and playing a part in helping reduce carbon emissions.

Things to consider

  • Higher capital investment
Currently electric vehicles cost more than petrol and diesel vehicles which can put businesses off. It’s worth checking incentives and grants that are on offer when you plan to swich as these can save a significant amount of money.
  • Check charging infrastructure
The UK’s vehicle charging network is expanding but do check coverage on your drivers’ routes.
  • Check your vehicle’s range
Make sure the vehicle’s you invest in are suited to the job (have adequate range) and will cope with the distances between available EV charge points on your drivers’ routes.
  • Replacing battery
Replacing a battery in an electric vehicle can be costly so it’s worth factoring in some contingency for unexpected replacement costs. Also, check the manufacturer’s warranty and consider paying for extended cover.
